Ever since Keren Su was a child, he read many poems about the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. The Yangtze is China’s Mother River, draining one-fifth of China’s total land area and home to one-third of China’s population. The spectacular Three Gorges in the middle reaches of the Yangtze is a stretch of about 200 km known for its spectacular deep cliffs. The many dangerous rapids have made navigation extremely hazardous. Walkways were chiseled on the sheer cliff face to allow access. However, the Chinese have both revered and feared this mighty river. Dependent on its waters for fish and rice, they have been repeatedly victimized by its floods. It came no surprise that China’s leaders should dream of harnessing the river and turning its raw power into electricity. The Three Gorges Dam was finally built becoming the world’s largest hydroelectric project. As soon as Keren learnt about the construction of the dam, he knew many sites of archaeological and historical importance would be submerged under the water. During those years, Keren traveled to that region many times, using his camera to record history. In this room, you will see his historical photos, including the cliff inscriptions in Qutang Gorge and the ancient walkway on the cliff which are all under water now. In memory of the boat-pullers of the Three Gorges, Keren commissioned a wood carving based on his sketch. It is such a back-breaking job!
