Born and raised in Hangzhou, Keren Su named a room after the West Lake. It was the West Lake that attracted Kangxi Emperor to Hangzhou five times. His love for the lake can still be seen in the ten steles erected beside the Top Ten Scenes of the West Lake with his inscriptions. Keren’s childhood home was next to one of the ten scenes, “Listening to Orioles Singing in the Willows”. The West Lake also witnessed the darkest moment of Keren’s life. When the Cultural Revolution started in 1966, his home was destroyed and his parents were taken away. He was left all alone, not knowing where the next meal was. Naturally he turned to the lake. After dark, he swam to an island in the lake and fished. He was exhausted after the swim, but he caught fish. Later on, he became more skillful and caught many more fish. He watched the dragonfly flapping its wings; the fish jumping on the water and the tiny white lotus buds ready to bloom. Under the silver moonlight, he could no longer feel the pain and despair. The world was his alone. Those memories helped him survive the next ten harsh years in the labor camp. Keren pondered on how to display the West Lake. Finally he decided to make the bed a center piece by turning it into a Chinese pavilion. He installed railings on the wall and red columns and stone pillars of carved lions around the bed. They complement so well with the photos. With the addition of lotus and willow, the room presents you the classic beauty of the West Lake.
