The mysterious Taklimakan is not widely known, but it is China’s largest desert and the world’s second largest shifting sand desert second only to the Sahara. Meaning “place of no return”, it is now a barren Gobi desert. However, dozens of small kingdoms flourished here during the Han Dynasty 1,800 years ago. During Keren Su’s long career as a mountain guide and photographer, he lost track of how many times he had been to Taklimakan, but every time, he was equally awe-struck by the lost ruins and relics deep in the desert and the ancient civilizations that thrived in the oasis towns. Niya Kingdom was excavated in the early 20th century and came to be known as the “Pompeii of the Silk Road”. Among the relics, there was a brocade armband embroidered with the scripts, “Five stars rise in the east benefitting China”. What an interesting coincidence that today’s national flag of China bears the pattern of five stars! Keren greatly enjoyed seeing it in person and presents you a photo of it in this room. Taklimakan is a huge desert, very difficult to traverse, but today it has become a tourist attraction. The undulating sand dunes provide the perfect backdrop for the camel caravans, an everlasting image. The magic light on the desert during twilight and sunset is simply enchanting. Keren used his photos from his countless trips spanning several decades to decorate this room. Staying here, you will get to enjoy the mysterious yet magnificent ambience of the Taklimakan.
