Himalaya, what an awe-inspiring name! It is the world’s highest mountain range and has the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest. Keren Su’s 7-year career as a mountain guide is a chapter in his life he takes great pride in. He can never forget the snow-capped peaks jutting into the crystal blue sky, the cool air touching the corner of his lips, the colorful praying flags, the boiling hot sun and endless spinning of the praying wheels. Keren’s first climb of Mt. Everest was with the first American team in 1983. On his way to the base camp, he walked into a Sherpa village where a Tibetan man was sewing the sole of his new shoe in front of his stone house. Keren was amazed by his handiwork which was made with several very tightly pressed layers of cotton cloth and straw. To strengthen the sole, the Tibetan used thick hemp threads to stitch one layer on top of another. Keren was very touched and decided to exchange his boots for the Tibetan’s soles. Now the sole has become a historic piece in this room. In 1990, Keren helped organize the Peace Expedition, an international team to Mt. Everest that consisted of Americans, Chinese and Russians. It was a great success since 21 climbers made to the top. One of the climbers, Steven, brought back a piece of rock from the top of the peak. Keren has always treasured it and today he is sharing it with you. Keren’s photos in this room will let you glance into the mysterious world of the Himalaya and Tibet.
