During the Cultural Revolution, Keren Su was sent to the labor camp in northeastern China. During the ten years, he constantly suffered from cold and hunger. He was never happy with the heavy snow covering his shabby hut. All he remembered was the freezing cold chilling to the bone. Early in the morning, he had to drag himself out of the clay bed, put on a thick cotton coat and started working. His job was to deliver manure fertilizer to the field. Everything was frozen solid and covered with thick snow. He had to shovel off the snow, break up the manure into small pieces with his hoe and load it onto a horse cart. Then he headed towards the field far away. It was a very hard job and he hated it. Forty years later, when Keren returned to that area, it was so different. The same freezing snow has become a huge tourist attraction. As a photographer, Keren was amazed by the beautiful village surrounded by mountains buried in a thick blanket of snow. It was during the Chinese New Year. Every wooden farm house was decorated with red lanterns and red posters with Chinese prayers. The white fluffy snow was the best decoration, turning the whole village into a winter fairyland. It is no longer the nightmare Keren experienced so many years ago. Hope Keren’s photos displayed in this room will take you to the silver white wonderland of the snow village.
