In Chinese, “Dun” means Great and “Huang” means Glorious. Located in the Taklimakan, the world’s second largest desert, Dunhuang’s Mogao Grotto is a pearl on the ancient Silk Road. In 1981, on Keren Su’s bicycle adventure across China, he found himself standing in the grotto, surrounded by a beauty he had never experienced before. He was overwhelmed by excitement and deeply in awe of its magnificence. In his later years, he went back to Dunhuang many more times, but the first trip left an indelible impression on his memory which he has always treasured. Today, he finally had a chance to recreate his exhilarating experience in this room, Dunhuang. The Flying Asparas dance gloriously on the ceiling; ancient murals in the caves are reproduced on the wall; beautiful statues of Buddha sit serenely and the traditional latticed windows are decorated with dancing figures. Staying in this room, you will glimpse into the splendid treasure trove of Dunhuang’s Buddhist art.
