A collection of elegant silk embroidery pieces is displayed throughout this room, offset by custom handcrafted furniture and a long silk scroll depicting how a silkworm finally becomes the beautiful and delicate silk material. Four centuries before the western bible story of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood, a Chinese emperor’s wife , Leizu, already knew both how to make silk thread and how to operate a weaving loom. Leizu first discovered silk thread when she was sitting in the garden one afternoon with a cup in her hand. A silk worm dropped from a mulberry tree into her steaming tea. When she picked up the worm, it unfolded a very long, strong thread. This amazing phenomenon made her think about a replacement for the usual cotton weaving thread. It’s incredible that due to Leizu’s chance discovery, sophisticated industrial machines are now turning out silk products all over the world. It’s also amazing to see the original handiwork, still used by the people isolated in the remote mountains, generation by generation.
