Enjoy a spectacular view of the outside landscape during your stay in the Calligraphy room, filled with beautiful examples of the various styles of Chinese writing, evolving from 5000 years ago, until quite recently. Pictography letters, oracle bones, knife-carved strokes upon turtle shells—the origins of Chinese calligraphy relate fascinating information about the people and their rituals in ancient times. From rudimentary origins based in superstition and used in fortune telling, evolving into brushwork on bamboo and wood before China’s invention of paper, Chinese history has been recorded and passed down through various writings. The changing writing style evokes many different periods in history, the most recent being 1950, when the People’s Republic of China simplified it. Meanwhile Hong Kong and Taiwan have retained the old style, right up until the present time. Following the advent of paper, intellectuals began using calligraphy in a more artistic way, since this medium enabled them to work much faster and the soft brush allowed more creative use of texture. So although the essence of Chinese calligraphy hasn’t changed, its style became more inventive over the later dynasties. Once you arrive here, you might even be inspired to write your own story.
