Rock is such a common material, but it does play an important role in the daily life of Chinese people. In this room, given our lodge’s location and because it’s such an important element of traditional Chinese culture, daily life and architecture, we have included several items relating to the local people’s utilization of rock. Since rock carvings can be regarded as works of art in their own right, they showcase the skills of long-ago artisans and the changing styles of artistic expression over time. The Rock Room displays an impressive collection of antique private seals, gathered throughout China with appreciation for the artistic characteristics and the processes involved in creating them. From old times until today, Chinese people have relied on stone made carved stamps for signatures to put on official or important documents. As styles of carving changed over the centuries, the carvers of these seals have generated a most distinctive form of national art. Other rock related art pieces featured in this comfortable and elegant room include stone carved documents and ink stone slabs, complemented by hand-crafted furniture and local photography.
